Prostate Cancer Screening. Goshen Health System

It Could Be the Difference Between Life and Death.

All men are at risk for prostate cancer, especially as they age. In fact, one in six men will be diagnosed with the disease in his lifetime. As the most common cancer found in men, early detection is key. While the disease can be found after symptoms appear, many men with early prostate cancer have no symptoms. Plus, the disease impacts each man differently. To find prostate cancer early, regular screening is essential. A complete prostate cancer screening, offered free through Goshen Center for Cancer Care (Goshen, IN), includes a PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) blood test and DRE (Digital Rectal Exam).

Early Detection Saves Lives.

More cases of prostate cancer are being diagnosed every day. But when detected early, the disease is highly treatable. In fact, if found early, survival rates for prostate cancer can reach 90 percent. The PSA blood test is a reliable and effective screening tool for early detection of prostate cancer. This test works by measuring PSA (a protein produced by the prostate) levels in the blood, which is elevated as prostate cancer develops and grows. For a complete prostate cancer screening, a physician must also conduct a DRE to check the prostate for any irregularities in size, shape or texture.

Starting at age 50, you should receive a PSA test and DRE once a year. If you’re at a higher risk for prostate cancer, you should begin testing at age 45. Men at a higher risk include African-American men or those with a strong family history of the disease. However, all men over age 40 should speak with their doctors during their annual physical to develop a proactive prostate health plan.
